Are you having a good hair day or do you need some good hair care? In both cases, you have landed on the right page. I am an Indian and for the most part of my childhood, I stayed with my grandmother. I have learned a lot of her kitchen pharmacy techniques just by living with her and observing, experiencing the same. Today, I will share with you, my favorite castor oil & egg hair mask recipe.
If you have been pregnant, or if you left breastfeeding, or if you are going through a hormonal imbalance or even if you are stressed, you may experience the quintessential “HAIRFALL” problem. This gives you other problem, like thinning of hair, lack of bounce and volume in the hair and overall bad health of your crowning glory.
Obviously, you will have to see a Doctor if it gets serious, but what doesn’t hurt is taking care of your hair through your diet, oil massages and some herbal and harmless hair masks.
Sharing with you, one of my favorite DIY hair masks from the ingredients that you can easily find in your kitchen cabinets.

CASTOR OIL HAIR MASK FOR HAIR GROWTH
What you need:
- 1 tablespoon castor oil
- 2 eggs*
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, use for extra softness & if you have frizzy hair)
Place the castor oil, egg, and honey in a bowl and whip them all together until well combined. This hair mask is enough for shoulder length hair, if you have longer hair double or triple the quantity. This pack is ok to be used for color treated and keratin treated hair as well. Infect, it will reduce the chemical damage.
*If your hair is dry, coarse, then use just the egg yolk.

How to use:
Apply the mixture on your scalp and hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap or you can wrap a cloth around your head, and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes. Next, wash your hair with a sulfate free shampoo, you can even use am ayurvedic powder shampoo or baby shampoo for chemical-free cleaning.

A little about Castor Oil.
Since I am an Indian, coconut oil, mustard oil, sesame oil, almond oil are part of our diet, our beauty and hair care regime right from our childhood. Everyone knows about the benefits of coconut oil, but I think castor oil is one forgotten distant cousin who also is a powerhouse of awesomeness too. It cannot be made an active part of our cooking, but it surely can find it’s place in our beauty regimen. Castor oil has an abundance of vitamins A, D, E, B12, biotin often touted as the ‘hair growth vitamin’, iodine, selenium, and pantothenic acid will help prevent any hair loss and thicken thinning hair. While vitamin D and B12 promote new growth and amino acids keep split ends at bay. (Ok, I did google that up!) But seriously, it’s amazing if you want hair growth on your head, even eyebrows and eyelashes. And it works super well with eggs in any mask.
The good thing about castor oil is that it doesn’t clog the pores; in fact, it unclogs the pores and removes the dirt and grease which is sitting inside the hair follicles, making it cleansing oil for your scalp. Also, castor oil speeds up the removal of toxins from the scalp that could potentially damage hair and slow growth. And it is super moisturizing. You will know it when you use this mask and touch your hair afterward.
There are many brands available in the market, but I buy the one from the pharmacy. Look for pure castor oil, which is pale yellow in color and doesn’t have any smell. When you buy castor oil, look for one that is cold pressed, unrefined and hexane free. Such type of oil will be rich in nutrients and free from any artificial chemicals.
My Secret Hair-Potion

So, here is what I do. I castor oil, almond oil & coconut oil in the ratio of 1:2:2 and keep it in my handy little bottle in my bathroom drawer. I use this mix of oil to massage my scalp at least once in a week to leave it on overnight and shampoo my hair next day. I mostly do it on Wednesday /Thursday, so I am assured to have a good hair day on the weekend. This mix is absolutely ok for your little one too because I use the same to massage the scalp of my toddler and she has lovely hair too. If you are too busy to make and wear a hair mask, try this potion. And you will send me virtual hugs and kisses later.
What do you do to take care of your hair? Have you ever tried a castor oil & egg mask? Do comment and let me know. Would love to hear from you.
