My Geeky Toddler is a Star Wars fan

I am a mother of a toddler. She is a girl. It’s common for her to get pink dresses and barbie dolls as gifts. I am sure you have heard that girls like dolls and boys like gadgets, right? May be some of you already believe in this and may be a lot of you have reasons to believe in it. I am a mother of a daughter, whose favorite color is pink. She likes to dress up as a princess and she also has her fair share of dolls in her toy collection. Here is a story to bring to light that there is more to childhood than being tagged on the basis of gender stereotypes. Read on and do leave your comments.

It has been a couple of very exhausting days lately. The Little one was down with fever, I wasn’t well myself and that’s the worst possible combination for the mental health of people around us. 😂

So, we took the little one to The Toy Store ME. It’s one of our favorite stores. I must mention that she made me very proud yesterday. She ran to the baby Annabella toys section first. Oohed and aahed and gushed there for some time and then quickly rushed to the lego table. She is only 2 so we haven’t yet bought her Legos (small parts scare). Madam spent quite a few minutes building things and explaining them to me. Then her Daddy walked in and asked her what she wants. Little one ran to the star wars section and picked a bb-8 toy. I almost fainted when she announced I want ” bb-8″. I honestly had no idea that she knows what it’s called.

I looked at her and I looked at my husband who was melting like an ice cream in the sun. I really haven’t seen my husband this proud ever. “A geek child is a nerd man’s biggest dream”. Dear Daddy bought her that rather expensive BB-8 toy in a jiffy.

I have casually heard people telling my husband, you should try for a boy to inherit all your gadgets and geekiness. I guess this little story shuts them off. We were raising a child. Yes, she is a girl but her choice of dresses or toys or interests have nothing to do with her sex. And I think we are nailing it.

  1. I love that you are letting your little girl embrace her interests without any judgement! she is too adorable and I love that she loves Star Wars!

  2. Pink is a bold color and i feel it should not be stereotyped. It is so typical of people in India to try for a boy so that they will be our budhapa ka sahara!!

You will be surprised to know that India is not the only one with this mindset.

Great post! The little ones are just starting to explore and learn who they are as individuals. So of course they should have the opportunities to see what all is available even if it doesn’t conform to the traditional gender stereotyping. Parenting win!

      Thanks so much

  4. Love this! I have a son and two girls (4, 2 and 11 months) and they all just play with toys. Not boy toys or girl toys, just whatever they enjoy 🙂

      How awesome is that!

  5. My daughter has also re-educated me on what it means to be a girl. She’s loud, rough, and likes all types of toys, yet she still loves princess dresses, cute hair and nail polish.
