Megz Review: Power-Life-Boxing at PLX, Dubai + 1 FREE class pass for my readers

What comes to your mind when I say the word, Boxing?  Is it Rocky and the song ‘Eye Of the Tiger’, or Hillary Swank with her perfect body in Million Dollar Baby, or Priyanka Chopra throwing punches in and as Mary Com- the biopic? If you are someone who follow boxing as a sport than maybe you would think about your favorite boxer and/or your favorite match, that stayed in your mind.

I am a 30+ mommy next door. I am not a fitness model and I am definitely not a fitness inspiration. Not yet anyway. My goal right now is to reduce my baby tummy, so people stop asking me if I am pregnant, because I look pregnant ever since I got pregnant some 3 years back and to get my bum look younger than their real age. Also, I am quite a chicken when it comes to fighting or showing aggression. I don’t think I have hit even a fly successfully not in my first attempt anyway. Boxing to me is something, very fit people with lot of anger inside them do. And neither am I fit nor am I so angry to bite off someone’s ears in a boxing match. Then what am I doing reviewing a Power- Life Boxing group session. How did I even reach that place? You wonder… right?

So, I first heard of it when I met Maira (you know her from my Zumba Review) in a Zumba class. She talked to me about PLX and she asked me to come visit her and take a demo class. She promised me that the fear is in my head and I am going to love it. To be honest, it wasn’t any sense of moral obligation that inspired me to check them out but it was the promise of a flat stomach and a tight butt and one look at here, I was sold. I really wanted to do what she does.

So, few days back, on a Saturday, I dragged my friend and reached the Football Center where, PLX Group Exercises are held. The moment you enter the place you feel a rise in your testosterone levels. The air is a mix of nervous excitement, sweat, and the smell of a punch from boxing gloves. But, it was also the least intimidating gym that I’ve ever walked into. Everyone really looked very happy, very relaxed and not angry at all.

Knocking out Viktor Zaman with my Mommy Punch

I am greeted by Viktor, the coach who has 20 years + experience professional sports. He is tall, handsome and happy and he was not the image I had of a boxer-turned-trainer I had carved in my mind. He was very encouraging, looked passionate about the sport and he immediately eased me up, got me excited about what was to come. He said, “You are going to love boxing” and by now, I think I believed it too.

The Class:

The studio itself was very bright and airy, the green grass like texture under my feet was new to me, never seen before in a gym. I loved the décor, the wall, though I seriously wished there were some mirrors on at least one wall, to check your position out and in my case to admire what I was doing, because I really felt pretty badass.

The class started with a 10-15-minute warmup, which included some stretching and then plenty of cardio. It included some jogging, jumping jacks, side stepping, high knees, skips, and more. I started to sweat during the warmup, and was all pumped up by the end to start the boxing!

For beginners, the first half hour is given to the basics of throwing punches while the rest of the group pair up and practice pad work. The basics turn out to be quite complicated. The most important thing to get right, apparently, is the swing in your hips and the swivel of your feet. The weight exchange from back-to-front and front-to-back is much more difficult to master than it looks, but essential to good technique.

Maira said, “The power is not in your arms. The power comes from your torso, your stance helps you keep the balance and the swivel of your hips, sends you the strength to throw the right punch in the right direction”

Following our brief introduction, we are paired up and join the rest of the sweaty gang to practice our 1 and 2 moves that we learned. After that, came the circuit training. Each stage of the circuit is a three-minute ’round’, with the bell signaling when it is time to move every 60 seconds.  The circuit includes weights, squats, lunges, sit-ups, plank, steps or knee high (using ladder to jump in and out off) and sit ups.

Don’t be discouraged if you get a little lost! Sometimes I would lose track of the “sequence” we were doing (probably because I was getting super tired). I just tried to keep moving, and then kept my eyes on what the other more experienced boxers were doing around me, and catch up. I was not looking like Hillary Swank killing it for sure, but I was having fun and felt good endorphins under my skin.

After the circuit, we practiced our 1 and 2 boxing move with the trainer, and the rest of the gang.  This was fun and I suddenly felt the dormant aggression lying beneath me. This was a good release. After some time, (sorry I lost track of time by then) we were asked to lie down for some Abs exercise. The trainer guided us throughout and I was so high on endorphins, or joy of kicking ass that I actually did my best ever in crunches, sit-ups and, side crunches and some more abs workout.  I was loving it.

The Instructor:

Viktor Zamon & Maira Lorena are the trainers who take you through this Group Exercise class of Power-Life Boxing or PLX in short.

Coach Maira Lorena

Maira dons many hats. She is a Sponsored Athlete Ambassador – Greentea X50, a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Zumba Instructor and that’s how I met her. She is also a  Fitness Competitor, a Professional Latin Dancer and most people know her through her stint on reality TV as a coach on Fightingfit DXB. To read more about her, click here.

I found them both so cohesive, collaborative and in sync as the duo who took the group of beginners and advanced boxers very efficiently through each stage of their workout. I truly felt motivated and overjoyed in their company. These two share and shower a common passion towards sports and fitness and that’s highly infectious.

Who Came:

This class was a FREE trial class for me and my friend, but we joined a mix group of other participants who were all paid members. There were men and women, different body-types, different age and even different fitness levels and they were all doing their best in unison. It’s my first time where I was performing a physical exercise with men next to me in a sport which is considered ‘manly’ and yet felt great on my own.  What I realized it, this PLX programme could be for anyone and everyone. And kudos to the instructor for making it so customized and yet challenging for all participants.

Power Life Boxing- The Megz Review
For the love of boxing

What I Loved:

I totally loved the Instructors. Really! I was so unsure of this PLX exercise. I in my wildest dream wouldn’t have thought I could survive 1 hour of intensive workout and come out feeling stronger and happier. And the credit here goes to the duo who ran it for us.  I also loved the light in the room. The gym was well-lit, the AC was working fine, even when all of us were sweating, the place didn’t smell bad. And the last and most importantly, I loved the calories I burnt in just one session.  I had read this on the internet, ‘A well-trained boxer is the most thoroughly conditioned human in the sporting world: there is no other sport that demands such a sustained level of ruthless physicality from its participants’, now I know how.

What I disliked:

I wish there was a “what to expect” talk before the class started. I personally like to know where my session is going. But I did like the element of surprise and felt like I was part of a reality show. But, for the sake of a group class, I would like it if the instructor, speak to the group, introduce themselves and tell them what will happen in what time interval and then kick start the session. My 2 cents.

Megz Review of Power Life Boxing Dubai
Never felt so feisty before

The Takeaway:

It’s a strenuous class and I came out of that door pink with sweat with my spirits high and tummy hurting with all the abs exercise I did. I never knew a person like me had it in her to do cardio, circuit training, abs workout and boxing all in crazy speed , methodically under the guidance of two instructor that too in 60 minutes. I was not amazing in the class but I was amazed by what I felt while I was doing this group exercise. I highly recommend it for friends, couples and mommy gangs. Go for it. Yoga, Pilates and Dance are amazing and will help you lose weight but PLX will not only help you get that Bum & Tum of your dreams but will also make you “feel” powerful, focused, positive and may even help you channel your pent up anger through boxing.

Hope you are enjoying reading my review of different group exercises like Zumba and now PLX at different fitness studios.

Most exercise is boring: that’s why people spend a fortune on gyms they don’t use. If there is a key to getting in shape, it consists of finding a way to work out that doesn’t feel as if you’re going to work.  I hope through the review of an average mom like me, you will be able to find what makes you groove.

Do tell me, what exercises would you like reviewed the next time?  Leave a comment down below and tell me all about it! I would love to read your suggestions and apply it, and work on it.

Keep your fitness journey going, and don’t forget to follow me on Facebook and Instagram

Most importantly, just have fun!

      May you find one soon

  2. I don’t think I can take up boxing or any other sport to make a part of my fitness journey. I am into dancing and pretty happy with it. But I am glad that you shed your inhibitions and picked up an activity that you thought you never would do.

    1. Love Life And The Little One

Yes, I am glad I did it. Pilates is still my happy place but PLX was quite a badass change for me. Loved it!

  3. I am still at my fitness journey and have been at it for a few months now. I am just trying to get myself back into a reasonable shape as well, which is hopefully not a pear or an apple. Although I am not sure I want to be a French fry or an hour glass either. I will work on that shape thing and get back to you. Either way, I think it’s great that you are doing this and keep up the good work.
